The anatomy of the city was nothing unusual. Tall buildings loomed over head and the pale, gray sidewalk shimmered as it radiated the heat of the day. There was more traffic, to be sure. More people in general. Cities and towns back home tended to be large but spread out. Here, it felt as if people were crawling all over one another.

Marcus walked without a thought to any particular direction. He had the Avenger's mansion address in his possession, but it was not his current destination. A room for the evening was the first item on the agenda. Then, perhaps, a meal. Airline fares were wretched in both senses of the word.

The long, black leather case that contained the Ebony Blade was stretched out along his back with the strap slung across his chest like a bandoleer. Not the most convenient method for carrying a weapon, should trouble arise. Of course, if trouble arose, that would not have been his first weapon of choice. Nor his second or third.

The blade was part of his legacy. But, it was also a curse. A responsibility.

His true legacy hung around his neck. The Avalon pendant rested safely against his chest, hidden by his shirt. It was a comforting weight. It inspired confidence like armor around him. With it, he felt ready to take on any challenge or foe. When activated, the actual armor it summoned wasn't too shabby, either.

Not for the first time since leaving home, Marcus wished he could activate the pendant if only to summon his horse, Aether. Not only for the benefit of the transport, but for the company. Aether was his only friend in the country. Everyone he knew was thousands of miles away.

He regretted the distance, but not the choice to leave. With his father gone, nothing else had seemed to have a hold strong enough to keep him. There was a certain degree of wanderlust in his heart that had caused a few arguments in his youth. He had eventually mastered the urge, but it had never really faded. Now that he was on his own and the bearer of the mantle of the Black Knight, he saw no more reason to deny it. The old stories of Camelot and knights of old had always held such fascination for him. It was time to roam a new countryside in search of dragons to slay.

The roundtable of his age was inside the Avengers mansion. He only hoped there was a space left for him.
